Is education in Mallorca valued in the world?

If we speak about various schools, it's worth mentioning that Mallorca is a luxury resort where rich and famous people often purchase real estate. And top world educational organizations couldn't ignore this critical fact. How many years do children study at schools in Mallorca?

Children in Spain start to go to school at an early age. And let's talk about pre-school education in Mallorca. Parents may send their children to kindergarten even at the age of three months. Such institutions are called "Escuela infantile" or "Guardería en Mallorca." They are also divided into public and private. The public ones are free, and the private ones can cost you at least 250 EUR per month. Please note that pre-school education in Mallorca is optional. But it has excellent benefits for preparing children for further instruction.

Compulsory education in Spain starts at the age of six. First of all, children enter primary school. There they'll be studying for the next six years. The primary school in Mallorca is called "Colegio Primario."

Secondary school – "Escola Secundária" – is also compulsory for children. The duration of education at this stage is four years.

The last two school years imply specialized education. This type of school is called "Escuela bachillerato." It's worth mentioning that these last two years are optional. But as a rule, all children in Mallorca study in such schools before entering universities worldwide.

When does the school year start in Mallorca?

The school year in Mallorca starts in mid-September. Typically, this is the period from September 15 to September 22. The school year ends in June, from the 15th to the 22nd. This is due to the weather conditions. So children may not be at school during the hottest season.

How long is a school day?

The duration of the school day in Mallorca is different and depends on the type of school.
  • In public schools, children study from 08:00 AM to 02:00 PM.
  • In semi-public schools, the day lasts from 09:00 AM to 02:00 PM. There is also a possible extension to 05:00 PM.

For their child to enter school, the parents must provide information about registration at the place of residence. This document is issued by the Mayor's Office (Ayuntamiento) at the registration location. The paper is issued based on a real estate lease contract or an ownership document.

Education in public schools in Spain is free. The only exceptions are textbooks and Chromebook computers, which are required for 3rd and higher-grade primary school children. However, the Ministry of Education in Spain pays part of the costs (up to 50%) for textbooks and computers in public schools.

It's easy to choose a public school. It would be best to find out which schools belong to your Ayuntamiento according to the territory you're located in. Then you can read various online reviews about the schools in this territory. Next, you should visit a few schools that seem the most suitable. During the visit, please ask for a "tour" of the school and find out all the details on enrolling a child. By the way, teachers in all schools are fluent in English.

How can we change schools when moving to Mallorca? What is essential to be informed of?

Changing schools when moving to another region is always stressful for parents and children. And when you decide to move to another country, it's even more stressful, since people there speak another language, including at schools.

What essential steps can you take for your children to endure the change of school when moving to Mallorca quickly?

And how can you solve the issue of school enrollment?

Helpful tips for the transition to school in Mallorca

1.         You first need to decide how much money you're willing to spend on education for your children. There are three basic options:
  • education at public school – free;
  • semi-private school in Mallorca – 100 to 250 EUR per month;

  • private school – at least 500 EUR per month.

If you choose a public or semi-private school, you must understand that 80% of the lessons are in Spanish and Catalan.

2.         And if you prefer a private school, we strongly recommend you visit at least several. It's necessary to find an answer to the main question – which school is better?

Our company, "Yes! Mallorca Property," from its own experience, recommends the private schools as follows:

  • Colegio San Cayetano

  • Colegio Luis Vives

  • Baleares International College

The diplomas/certificates of these schools are widely valued not only in Europe but worldwide.

3.         You should also visit Ayuntamiento to get a document confirming your and your children's registration at the place of residence (necessary for public schools).

4.         After visiting several schools, you should decide and select one of them. You'll have to pay an annual fee in private schools – "Matricula." As a rule, it's equal to the payment for one month of studying.

5.         After you pay the first fee, you'll get access to the school application. It'll describe the education program, access to additional platforms, and a list of necessary textbooks you need to purchase. Also, you'll be informed on how and where to buy a school uniform and a computer, as well as sign up for a school bus (if necessary).

6.         Parents often hire a tutor if the child needs to speak Spanish. But, in practice, it isn't a necessary thing to do. During their first school year, children will begin speaking Spanish even without extra classes. Remember that Spanish is relatively easy for children of all ages to study and understand.

7.         If you bring your child in the middle of the school year, this will be fine. You need to request a report card from your school and pass the same procedure as before the start of the school year.

8.         Our company, "Yes! What Mallorca Property," would like to give you a main tip when your children change schools and start their education in Mallorca. And that advice is to stay calm. Mallorca has the most significant percentage of expats of all Spanish autonomous regions – 18%. Schools in Mallorca are ready for this since they have various regulations on how to behave with new children from different countries. Be sure that your children will be given as much attention as possible. They will be helped to get into the studying rhythm gently and without compromising the education itself.

Please remember that most private and semi-private schools are in Palma de Mallorca in Zonas escolares de Palma. This is a good area from the Son Vida district to Santa Catalina. Here you can select and purchase real estate and have good neighbors and a high quality of life.
